Fisker is a cautionary tale as much as a car brand. Founded in 2016 by the Danish designer Henrik Fisker, known for styling cars like the BMW Z8 and Aston Martin DB9, it aimed to build stylish electric vehicles without owning factories, outsourcing manufacturing to focus on design and software.
The flagship product was the Ocean, an electric SUV with striking looks and an eye-catching price. On paper the asset-light model was clever; in practice it left Fisker dependent on partners and exposed when things went wrong. This was actually Henrik Fisker's second car venture to struggle, after an earlier company in the previous decade.
Production problems, software bugs, and mounting losses overwhelmed the company, and Fisker filed for bankruptcy in 2024. For buyers, the brand now exists mainly as a small number of Ocean SUVs on the road and a hard lesson about how difficult it is to start a car company. It stands as a reminder that good design alone does not make a carmaker survive.
