Ineos is the unusual one here, an automaker created in 2017 by Jim Ratcliffe, the billionaire behind the Ineos chemicals group. The story goes that when Land Rover retired the old, utilitarian Defender, Ratcliffe decided to build a proper replacement himself, a no-nonsense off-roader for people who wanted function over fashion.
The result is the Grenadier, named after the London pub where the idea was supposedly hatched. It is deliberately old-school: body-on-frame construction, solid axles, and a focus on rugged capability and easy repair rather than touchscreens and refinement. It uses BMW engines and is built to genuinely work hard off-road.
As a young, single-model brand, Ineos has everything still to prove on reliability and resale. For buyers, the Grenadier appeals to a specific person: someone who wants a tool-like, genuinely capable 4x4 in the spirit of the old Defender or Land Cruiser, and is willing to back a brand-new name to get it. It is a niche, purposeful alternative in a market full of soft, road-biased SUVs.
